Did you know that families throw out the most amount of food per annum? Planning meals and smarter shopping habits are key to saving $.
Shocking new research from Sustainability Victoria has discovered that food waste contributes to an estimated cost of $5.4 billion annually in Victoria. While Gen Z were most wasteful, throwing out an average $115 of food weekly, households with children were also large contributors to food waste – with the average household chucking $2,000 worth annually! Parents say however, the kids are to blame. More than 1/3rd of parents named their children as the main suspects for food ending up in the bin. (42%)
Some key findings of the study include:
- While ¾ had a goal to save money at the shops, almost half of Victorians (46%) were not aware of how much money they were (quite literally) throwing away.
- Only 43% planned their purchases using a list, and 46% of people surveyed admitted to buying food they didn’t need.
- Males were more wasteful than females, throwing away almost double per week! ($54 compared to $29)
- More optimistically, 9/10 Victorians felt guilty about how much food they waste.
Take note, says Sustainability Victoria’s CEO Stan Krpan; households who use a shopping list have reduced food waste, compared to those who don’t. Smarter shopping, and family meal planning have been identified as ways to reduce waste to the environment…and the consumers hip pocket.
