This generation of teenagers are increasingly turning their backs on unhealthy habits, reveals a new report by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Use of illicit substances has declined drastically, as well as more youths than previous generations are abstaining from alcohol and other drugs longer. The research is over a 5-year period from 2011 to 2016.

Key findings from Australia’s 2018 health ‘report card’ include:

  • Amongst teens, cannabis use has halved and use of ecstasy and cocaine declined by a third. Use of meth/amphetamines has also dropped dramatically, from 6.2% to 0.8%.
  • Most smokers are now ageing, with over half of daily smokers in 2016 now aged 40+. (57%) In comparison, just 15 years ago the majority of smokers were aged 14–39. This trend shows teenage smokers declining from 5.0% in 2013 to just 2.1% in 2016.
  • More 12- 17-year-olds are abstaining from underage drinking. 81.5% up from 72.3% in 2013. The average age of teens first alcoholic drink is also rising, climbing from 15.7 years to 16.1 years.
These developments signal positive changes for the future of Australia’s health; with today’s youth on track to be one of the most health-conscious generations of consumer yet. According to the AIHW, small personal lifestyle changes can lead to big health gains and trends, for future populations. These stats provide new insights for marketers into the changing behaviours and habits of today’s teens and future generations; as they strive to lead healthier more mindful lives.
